Demo : Aluminium Sheet
Gauge

Description

"Gauge" is the thickness of the final sheet as supplied to the customer and is controlled during rolling by varying either rolling speed, unwind tension or a combination of both.

Why is it important ?

Specified by the customer.

How is it measured ?

On modern mills the control of gauge is automatic ("automatic gauge control") and is achieved as follows :

  1. a thickness gauge, mounted on the exit side of the mill (feedback AGC)
  2. a thickness gauge mounted on the entry side of the mill (feedforward AGC)
  3. the signal from load cells

which is fed into the control computer which can be configured to control the rolling load, rolling speed and unwind tension. The specifics of the AGC system are both mill and product dependent with major differences between foil and sheet systems.
